Description
Woodward 9907-028 Synchronization Controller
Product Dimensions:
The Woodward 9907-028 is an SPM-A (Speed and Phase Matching) Synchronizer, a critical component within Woodward’s power management family. It is designed to automatically bias a prime mover’s speed control to bring a generator into phase and frequency synchronism with a bus before the circuit breaker is closed.
Product Detailed Description
The 9907-028 SPM-A is a “high-voltage” AC model. Unlike more complex versions in the SPM-A line, this specific unit focuses strictly on speed and phase matching and does not include voltage matching functionality. It provides a proportional analog output signal to the speed control (such as a 2301A or EPG) to eliminate the frequency and phase difference between the generator and the utility grid or another generator.

Product Advantages
- Simplified Configuration: Because it lacks the voltage matching circuit, the 9907-028 is faster to commission and easier to wire than “Full” SPM-A models.
- Universal Compatibility: It is designed to interface seamlessly with legacy and modern Woodward speed controls, including the 2301, 2301A, EPG, and 2500 series.
- Operational Modes: Supports four switch-selectable modes:
- OFF: System is inactive.
- RUN: Normal synchronization and automatic breaker closure.
- CHECK: Normal synchronization but inhibits the breaker closure signal (for testing).
- PERMISSIVE: Limits synchronization from affecting engine speed.
- High Precision: Maintains a very tight phase window to ensure minimal mechanical stress on the generator and coupling during paralleling.
Important Considerations (Precautions)
- Voltage Matching: Since this model does not match voltage, the operator or an external automatic voltage regulator (AVR) must ensure the generator voltage is within the acceptable range of the bus before synchronization.
- Phase Rotation: Always verify that the phase rotation of the generator matches the bus. The synchronizer cannot correct for incorrect phase sequencing (e.g., ABC vs. ACB).
- Switchgear Coordination: Ensure the breaker closure time is accounted for in the system dynamics to prevent closing the breaker when the generator has already drifted out of the phase window.
- Grounding: To prevent signal noise, the shielded cables for the bias output to the speed control should be grounded at the speed control end only.
Product Applications
The 9907-028 is primarily used in industrial and utility power generation systems:
- Multi-Generator Paralleling: Synchronizing multiple diesel or gas engine generators to a common bus.
- Grid Paralleling: Synchronizing a private power plant (steam or gas turbines) with the utility grid for peak shaving or base load export.
- Emergency Power Systems: Ensuring rapid and safe synchronization of backup generators in hospitals, data centers, or critical infrastructure.
- Retrofit Projects: Replacing older, manual synchronization methods with an automated, high-reliability solution in existing switchgear.
