Description
SCHNEIDER 490NAE91100 Isolated Safety Barrier
Schneider Electric offers a robust range of Isolated Safety Barriers, primarily within the Acti9 and Preventa series, as well as specialized interface modules for hazardous areas. These devices are designed to provide galvanic isolation between safe-area control circuits and field devices located in explosive atmospheres (Ex-zones).
Product Detailed Description
An Isolated Safety Barrier acts as an energy-limiting interface. It ensures that even in a fault condition (such as a short circuit or overvoltage in the non-hazardous area), the electrical energy delivered to the hazardous area remains below the level required to ignite an explosive atmosphere. Unlike Zener barriers, Isolated Barriers do not require a high-integrity safety earth connection because they provide complete galvanic isolation between input, output, and power supply.
Typical Technical Parameters
Specifications vary by specific model, such as the Expert or Universal ranges.
| Parameter | Specification (Typical) |
| Supply Voltage | 24 V DC (nominal) |
| Input Signal | 4–20 mA, 0–10 V, or Dry Contact |
| Output Signal | 4–20 mA, Relay, or Transistor |
| Galvanic Isolation | 2.5 kV AC (Input / Output / Power) |
| Response Time | \le 20 ms (Digital) / \le 100 ms (Analog) |
| Power Consumption | \le 1.5 W to 2.2 W |
| Explosion Protection | [Ex ia] IIC, [Ex iaD] |
| Safety Integrity Level | SIL 2 or SIL 3 (depending on model) |
Key Product Advantages
- No Safety Earth Required: Because they provide galvanic isolation, they eliminate the need for a dedicated, low-resistance “Ex-earth,” simplifying installation and reducing costs.
- Signal Integrity: Isolation prevents ground loops and protects the control system (PLC/DCS) from common-mode noise and electrical interference.
- Compact Design: Slim 12.5mm or 17.5mm housing allows for high-density mounting on standard 35mm DIN rails.
- Smart Diagnostics: Many Schneider models include LED indicators for “Power On,” “Signal Status,” and “Line Fault Detection” (LFD) to identify broken wires or short circuits in the field.
Important Considerations (Precautions)
- Intrinsically Safe (IS) Wiring: IS wiring (blue cables) must be physically separated from non-IS wiring by at least 50mm or via a physical partition to prevent induction.
- Entity Parameters: Always verify that the barrier’s output parameters (U_o, I_o, P_o) are compatible with the field device’s input parameters (U_i, I_i, P_i) and cable capacitance/inductance.
- Ambient Temperature: Ensure the control cabinet has adequate ventilation; isolated barriers generate more heat than passive Zener barriers.
- Certification: Ensure the device’s ATEX/IECEx certification matches the specific Zone (0, 1, or 2) and Gas Group (IIA, IIB, or IIC) of your environment.
Product Applications
Schneider Isolated Safety Barriers are essential in industries where flammable gases or dust are present:
- Oil & Gas: Interfacing with pressure transmitters and solenoid valves on offshore platforms or refineries.
- Chemical Processing: Monitoring temperature sensors (RTDs/Thermocouples) in reactor vessels.
- Wastewater Treatment: Protecting methane gas sensors and level transmitters in digester tanks.
- Pharmaceutical: Controlling high-precision filling machinery in sterile, alcohol-rich environments.
