Description
ProSoft MVI56-ADM Module
Product Dimensions:
1. Product Detailed Description
The MVI56-ADM acts as a bridge between the ControlLogix backplane and external devices. It functions like a small stand-alone computer housed in a single-slot PLC module.
Key features of its operation:
-
Custom Programming: Users write applications in C or C++ using standard development tools.
-
Dual Serial Ports: It features two fully isolated serial ports (PRT1 and PRT2) that can be individually configured for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485.
-
Backplane Communication: It transfers data to and from the ControlLogix processor via high-speed “block transfers” across the backplane.
2. Product Parameters (Specifications)

3. Product Advantages
-
Flexibility: Ideal for interfacing with legacy or proprietary devices that do not support standard industrial protocols (Modbus, EtherNet/IP, etc.).
-
Intellectual Property Protection: Because logic is compiled into a C binary and stored on the module, your proprietary algorithms are hidden from the standard PLC ladder logic.
-
Reduced PLC Load: Moves complex string handling (ASCII) or intensive math calculations off the main PLC CPU, improving overall system scan times.
-
High Isolation: The isolated serial ports ensure that electrical noise or ground loops from field devices do not damage the PLC rack.
4. Cautions & Precautions
-
Development Skills: Unlike standard “plug-and-play” ProSoft modules, this requires proficiency in C programming and an understanding of the ADM API library.
-
Legacy Status: As of 2024/2025, the MVI56-ADM is considered a legacy product. Support may be limited, and new designs should consider the MVI56E-ADM (Enhanced version) or Linux-based alternatives.
-
Battery Backup: The module uses a lithium battery to back up the CMOS and real-time clock. If stored unpowered for more than 21 days, the clock may reset.
-
Hazardous Locations: Ensure compliance with Class I, Division 2 wiring methods if installing in explosive environments.
5. Product Applications
-
Barcode & RFID: Processing data from high-speed scanners or RFID readers where custom parsing is required.
-
Legacy Protocols: Connecting to older CNC machines, scales, or lab equipment using non-standard ASCII sequences.
-
Complex Math: Running custom chemical formulas or heavy data-processing algorithms that are difficult to write in Ladder Logic.
-
Protocol Conversion: Acting as a gateway between a proprietary field network and the ControlLogix system.
