Description
PHOENIX SUBCON9 9-pin D-SUB Bus Connector
Product Dimensions:
The Phoenix Contact SUBCON 9 series consists of D-SUB fast connectors designed for industrial fieldbus systems. They allow for quick, tool-free or screw-terminal connection of fieldbus cables directly to 9-pin D-SUB interfaces on PLCs, drives, or industrial PCs.
The most common variants include the SUBCON 9/F-SH (female) and SUBCON 9/M-SH (male), featuring a standard 90^\circ cable entry designed for universal RS-485 and RS-232 serial communications.
Product Detailed Description
The SUBCON 9 connector replaces traditional soldered or crimped D-SUB connectors with an easy-to-wire terminal block interface housed inside a rugged, EMI-shielded enclosure. It splits the 9-pin D-SUB signals out to clearly labeled screw or spring-cage terminals, allowing field technicians to wire or reconfigure serial networks quickly without specialized tools.

Product Advantages
- Easy Field Assembly: Eliminates the need for soldering or specialized crimping tools in the field; a simple screwdriver is all that is required for standard versions.
- Excellent EMI Shielding: The metal-plated ABS housing provides high electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) protection, which is crucial for preventing data corruption on RS-485 networks in high-noise environments.
- Flexible Cable Routing: The internal termination block can be rotated inside the housing, allowing the cable to enter from either the top or the bottom (90^\circ or 270^\circ).
- Integrated Strain Relief: The housing features a robust internal metal clamp that secures the cable outer jacket, preventing mechanical stress on the signal wires.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Termination Resistors: Unlike protocol-specific connectors (such as SUBCON-PLUS-PROFIBUS), standard SUBCON 9 connectors do not feature a built-in, switchable termination resistor. If your network requires a 120\ \Omega terminating resistor, you must manually wire it across the signal terminals at the end-of-line nodes.
- Shield Continuity: Ensure that the cable’s braided shield is stripped back correctly and firmly clamped under the housing’s metal strain relief to maintain proper grounding.
- Tightening Torque: Do not overtighten the small terminal block screws, as this can strip the threads or damage fine-stranded wires.
Product Applications
The SUBCON 9 is widely utilized in legacy and standard serial automation architectures:
- PLC Programming Interfaces: Connecting programming cables or HMIs to the serial ports of legacy control systems.
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Linking multi-drop RS-485 communication networks across a bank of motor drives.
- Industrial PC (IPC) Connectivity: Interfacing serial sensor arrays or barcode scanners to PC-based control systems via standard COM ports.
- Custom Serial Gateways: Wiring custom RS-232/485 pinouts for specialized protocol converters and modems.
