Description
NI PXI Slot Blocker (PXI Chassis Slot Blocker)
The NI PXI Slot Blocker (often sold in kits, such as the PXI Slot Blocker Kit) is a mechanical accessory designed for PXI and PXI Express (PXIe) chassis. While it has no electrical components, it is a critical tool for maintaining the health and performance of high-end automated test systems.
Product Detailed Description
A PXI Slot Blocker is a plastic or metal insert designed to occupy an unused slot in a PXI chassis. Its primary function is to manage airflow. In a PXI chassis, the cooling system is designed to pull or push air across the modules. If slots are left empty, the cooling air will take the “path of least resistance” through the empty space, bypassing the active, heat-generating modules. The Slot Blocker prevents this air bypass.

Product Advantages
- Optimized Cooling: By forcing air through the intake vents of active modules rather than through empty slots, it can reduce the operating temperature of sensitive instruments by several degrees.
- Extended Equipment Life: Lower operating temperatures directly correlate to a longer Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for expensive PXI modules like oscilloscopes or FPGA cards.
- Improved Measurement Accuracy: Many high-precision NI modules are sensitive to thermal drift. Better airflow management leads to a more stable thermal environment and more consistent measurements.
- Debris Protection: Acts as a physical barrier to prevent dust, metal shavings, or stray wires from entering the chassis backplane through open slots.
Important Considerations (Precautions)
- Installation Direction: Ensure the blocker is seated firmly. If it is loose, it may vibrate and create acoustic noise or fail to block air effectively.
- Filler Panels vs. Slot Blockers: Note that a Filler Panel only covers the front opening of the chassis for aesthetics and EMI shielding. A Slot Blocker extends deep into the chassis to physically occupy the air path. For maximum cooling, use both.
- EMI/RFI: Standard plastic slot blockers do not provide Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding. If your application is sensitive to RF noise, you must use metal filler panels in conjunction with the blockers.
- Do Not Force: If the blocker does not slide in easily, check for obstructions on the backplane or guide rails.
Product Applications
- High-Power Test Stands: Systems containing high-performance processors or PXIe modules that generate significant heat (e.g., NI Vector Signal Transceivers).
- Industrial Environments: Using blockers in factory-floor chassis to minimize the accumulation of dust on the backplane connectors.
- Incomplete Systems: Any PXI system where 2 or more slots are currently unoccupied.
- Calibration Labs: Environments where maintaining a constant internal temperature is vital for the stability of precision voltage or frequency references.
