The SLG720 utilizes Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology. It sends low-power electromagnetic pulses along a probe (rod or cable). When these pulses hit the surface of the process medium, they are reflected back to the electronics. By measuring the “time of flight,” the device calculates the precise distance to the material level.
Unlike non-contact radar, the guided wave design ensures the signal remains focused, making it ideal for narrow tanks or media with low dielectric constants.

Important Considerations & Precautions
- Probe Selection: Ensure the probe material (316SS, Hastelloy, etc.) is chemically compatible with the process fluid. Choose a rigid rod for short ranges/agitated tanks and a flexible cable for tall silos.
- Obstructions: The probe must not touch the tank wall or internal structures (ladders, agitators). Maintain the manufacturer-specified “keep-out” zone to avoid false reflections.
- Nozzle Geometry: The height and diameter of the mounting nozzle can create “dead zones” at the top of the tank. Ensure the nozzle dimensions follow Honeywell’s installation guidelines.
- Dielectric Constant: If the medium has a very low dielectric constant (E_r < 2.0), special configuration or a coaxial probe may be required for a reliable signal return.
