Description
Honeywell 51402573-150 Isolated Safety Barrier
Product Dimensions:
Honeywell offers high-reliability Isolated Safety Barriers primarily within its Experion® PKS, Safety Manager, and Safety Manager SC architectures. These barriers are often designed in collaboration with leading intrinsic safety specialists (like Pepperl+Fuchs or MTL) or integrated directly into Honeywell’s specialized I/O Termination Assemblies (IOTAs). They provide essential galvanic isolation to protect electrical circuits located in hazardous areas (Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2 / Class I Div 1).
Product Detailed Description
An Isolated Safety Barrier (also known as an intrinsic safety isolator) acts as an energy-limiting circuit protection device. It prevents dangerous levels of electrical energy (voltage and current) from traveling from the safe area (control room) into a hazardous area where explosive gases, vapors, or dust may be present.
Unlike passive Zener barriers, Isolated Barriers incorporate galvanic isolation via transformers or optocouplers. This eliminates the need for a dedicated, high-integrity intrinsic safety (IS) ground connection, significantly simplifying installation and eliminating ground loop interference.
Typical Technical Parameters
Specifications vary depending on whether the module is an Analog Input (AI), Analog Output (AO), Digital Input (DI), or Digital Output (DO) barrier.
| Parameter | Typical Specification Range |
| Nominal Supply Voltage | 19 V to 30 V DC (Typically 24 V DC) |
| Galvanic Isolation | ge 2.5 kV AC between input, output, and power supply |
| Safety Integrity Level | SIL 2 or SIL 3 capable (IEC 61508) |
| Max Voltage (U_o) | Typically le 28 V DC (Hazardous side) |
| Max Current (I_o) | Typically le 93 mA (For typical analog loops) |
| Channels | 1-channel, 2-channel, or high-density 4-channel variants |
| Frequency Response | Supports HART digital signals superimposed on 4-20mA |
| Mounting | 35 mm DIN Rail or custom Honeywell IOTA plug-in |
Product Advantages
- No High-Integrity Ground Required: Because the input, output, and power supply circuits are fully isolated from one another, there is no need for an expensive and maintenance-heavy dedicated IS earth ground.
- Signal Conditioning & Integrity: They prevent ground loops and eliminate electrical noise common in industrial plants, ensuring cleaner 4-20mA or digital signal transmissions.
- HART Pass-Through Compatible: Modern Honeywell isolated barriers are transparent to HART bi-directional digital communication, enabling full field device asset management.
- High Density & Hot-Swappable: Many variants feature compact widths (e.g., 12.5 mm) or plug-in designs for Honeywell IOTAs, allowing for fast, live maintenance without shutting down neighboring channels.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Entity Parameter Matching: You must cross-verify that the barrier’s entity parameters (U_o, I_o, P_o) are less than or equal to the field instrument’s maximum safety parameters (U_i, I_i, P_i). Additionally, cable capacitance (C_c) and inductance (L_c) must be calculated.
- Separation of Wiring: Intrinsic safety regulations mandate strict physical separation between IS (hazardous side) and non-IS (safe side) wiring. Mixing them within the same wire duct or conduit invalidates the safety certification.
- Voltage Drop: Isolated barriers introduce an internal resistance. Ensure the remaining loop voltage is sufficient to power the field transmitter at its maximum 22mA over-range current.
- Environmental Sealing: The barriers themselves must be installed in a safe area or within a certified explosion-proof/purged enclosure if deployed in a Zone 2/Div 2 environment.
Product Applications
Honeywell Isolated Safety Barriers are utilized across hazardous process industries:
- Oil & Gas (Upstream & Downstream): Interfacing with pressure, level, and temperature transmitters on offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and refinery processing blocks.
- Chemical & Petrochemical Plants: Safeguarding control loops connected to explosive storage tanks and reactor vessels.
- Gas Metering & Pipelines: Protecting instrumentation monitoring natural gas flow and valve controls at remote custody transfer stations.
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Isolation for instruments in cleanrooms where volatile solvent vapors or combustible dusts are present.
