Description
GE LM10 Line Monitoring and Protection Device
Product Dimensions:
The GE Multilin LM10 is a modular Low Voltage Motor Protection System. While it is now considered a legacy product (succeeded by the MM200 series), it remains widely used in industrial Motor Control Centers (MCCs) for protecting three-phase motors up to 500 HP.
Product Detailed Description
The LM10 is more than just an overload relay; it is a microprocessor-based system that combines protection, monitoring, and control into a single modular package. It typically consists of a Base Unit, a PDU (Programmable Display Unit), and a CT (Current Transformer) Sensor Pack.
Technical Parameters
| Category | Specification |
| Motor Compatibility | Low voltage, three-phase motors (up to 500 HP) |
| Control Power | 120 V AC or 240 V AC (derived from CPT) |
| Inputs | 6 to 7 Digital Inputs (Start/Stop, Reset, Contactor Status) |
| Outputs | 4 Relay Outputs (Programmable for Faults, Ground Faults, etc.) |
| Current Inputs | Supports matched CT sensor packs or external 800:5 CTs |
| Communication | DeviceNet (Standard open protocol) |
| Operating Temp | 0°C to +60°C (Storage: -40°C to +85°C) |
| Protection Class | NEMA Class 10, 15, 20, 30 (Selectable) |
Product Advantages
- Compact Footprint: Specifically designed to fit into standard Motor Control Center “buckets” (compartments), saving valuable space.
- Integrated Logic: Features built-in starter logic for various motor types (FVNR, FVR, Two-speed), reducing the need for external timing relays or PLC I/O.
- Remote Monitoring: Using the DeviceNet protocol, it integrates directly with SCADA and DCS systems for real-time status and energy metering.
- Reduced Wiring: Matched CT sensor packs and integrated pushbuttons reduce the complexity and cost of factory and field wiring.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Legacy Status: As a legacy product, parts may be difficult to source. GE Vernova suggests the Multilin MM200 as the official retrofit replacement.
- Configuration: Programming is typically done via EnerVista Launchpad software. Ensure you have the correct communication drivers for your PC.
- CT Orientation: Ensure the Current Transformers are installed in the correct orientation as indicated by the polarity marks to ensure accurate power and unbalance readings.
- Voltage Isolation: Before maintenance, always isolate the motor power and control power; even if the motor is stopped, the LM10 may still be energized.
Product Applications
The LM10 is primarily found in heavy industrial environments where motor uptime is critical:
- Motor Control Centers (MCC): Used as the primary protection and control unit in modern MCC lineups (such as the GE Evolution).
- Water & Wastewater: Protecting pumps and aerators from jam, stall, or undercurrent conditions (dry running).
- Oil & Gas / Chemical: Managing motors in hazardous or process-intensive areas where remote diagnostics are required.
- HVAC & Commercial: Protecting large fan motors and chillers in commercial building management systems.
