Description
BACHMANN FS212/N Controller Module
Product Dimensions:
The Bachmann FS212/N (Item Number: 00017824-00) is a high-performance FASTBUS Slave Module belonging to the Fx210 Series. It is designed to enable the expansion and distribution of substations or SubDevices over long distances using fiber optic links with exceptionally low signal propagation delay.
Product Detailed Description
The FS212/N operates as a decentralized interface node within a Bachmann M1 automation system network. Equipped with two Fiber Optic (FO) interfaces, it permits ring or daisy-chain topologies to connect up to 15 distributed substations back to a master controller.
A unique feature of the FS212/N (distinguishing it from master modules) is its integrated 17W power supply. This power supply directly feeds the local backplane, supplying voltage to any adjacent I/O modules mounted on the same substation rail without requiring an independent power input module.

Transmission Medium & Distances
The achievable distance between two individual stations depends directly on the fiber cable type used:
- Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Up to 40 m (also called PMMA)
- Hard Cladded Silica (HCS): Up to 150 m (also called Plastic Silica Fiber / PCF)
- Special HCS Cable: Up to 200 m
Product Advantages
- Minimal Signal Delay: The hardware-optimized FASTBUS protocol guarantees microsecond-level determinism and ultra-low lag across the distributed sub-racks.
- Integrated Power Supply: Saves cost and DIN-rail space by combining the communication interface and the 17W I/O module power supply into a single slot.
- Fiber Optic Noise Immunity: Because the communication path uses optical fibers, the system is 100% immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI), ground loops, and lightning surges between buildings.
- Local Diagnostics: Features built-in hardware LEDs indicating network status (
RUN/ERR) and a dedicated physical display indicating the recognized fiber cable type. - Robust Certifications: Meets rigorous international standards, including CE, UL/cUL, and extensive maritime credentials (DNV/GL, LR, ABS, BV), ensuring reliability under harsh environmental conditions.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Fiber Alignment & Bend Radii: Fiber optic cables are fragile. Exceeding the specified minimum bending radius can induce severe light attenuation, generating intermittent
ERRflags. - Power Budgeting: The integrated power supply outputs 17W total across three voltage rails (+5V, +15V, -15V). Calculate the cumulative current draw of your local I/O cards to ensure you do not exceed these limits.
- Reverse Polarity Protection: While the module features internal reverse polarity protection, persistent overvoltage on the 24 VDC input can lead to failure.
- Cleanliness: Keep the optical transceiver ports covered with dust caps until installation. Microscopic dust on a fiber tip can dramatically degrade performance at long distances.
Product Applications
- Wind Energy Systems: Connecting the hub/nacelle control cabinets to the tower base controller across high-vibration and lightning-prone heights.
- Maritime & Offshore Automation: Distributed machinery control, propulsion monitoring, and alarm systems onboard vessels requiring compliance with marine type-approvals.
- Large Industrial Facilities: Linking distant assembly lines, conveyors, or water processing tanks back to a central Bachmann processor rail without adding latency.
