Description
Allen-Bradley 442L-SFZNMN3 Mini 3-Meter Safety Laser Scanner
Product Dimensions:
The Allen-Bradley 442L-SFZNMN is a high-precision SafeZone™ Mini Safety Laser Scanner. It is part of the Guardmaster® safety portfolio and is designed to provide compact, flexible area protection for hazardous machinery and automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
Product Detailed Description
The 442L-SFZNMN is a compact, presence-sensing device that uses a rotating laser to scan its surroundings. It creates a two-dimensional “safety field” and “warning field.” If an object (such as a person or a vehicle) enters the safety field, the scanner sends a stop signal to the machine’s control system. The “Mini” designation makes it ideal for applications where space is extremely limited.

Product Advantages
- Compact Dimensions: Its small frame allows it to be integrated into low-profile AGVs or small machine cells where standard-sized scanners would not fit.
- Wide Scanning Angle: The 270° field of view minimizes “blind spots,” allowing a single scanner to protect two sides of a machine (e.g., a corner mount).
- Flexible Field Configuration: Users can define complex, custom shapes for the safety and warning zones using the configuration software to match the specific geometry of the work area.
- Seven-Segment Display: Features a built-in display on the front face for immediate diagnostic information and error codes, simplifying troubleshooting.
- Integrated Diagnostics: Monitors its own optics for contamination; if the lens becomes too dirty to operate safely, it provides a warning before a system shutdown occurs.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Optical Path: Ensure the laser window is kept clean. Use only manufacturer-approved cleaning materials to avoid scratching the lens, which could lead to false trips.
- Reflective Surfaces: Highly reflective surfaces (like mirrors or polished metal) within the scan path can cause “phantom” objects or blind spots. Proper orientation is critical.
- Mounting Stability: The scanner must be mounted on a vibration-free surface. Excessive vibration can cause the rotating mirror to misalign, triggering an internal error.
- Safety Distance: The safety field must be calculated and set according to ISO 13855, accounting for the machine’s stopping time and the scanner’s response time.
Product Applications
- Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs): Providing collision avoidance and personnel protection for small mobile robots.
- Small Robot Cells: Guarding the entry points of robotic assembly stations where physical fencing is impractical.
- Stationary Machinery: Protecting the area around palletizers, stretch wrappers, or material handling equipment.
- Vertical Protection: Can be mounted vertically to act as a “safety door” or access control for open machinery apertures.
