Description
Allen-Bradley 1734-TOP I/O Module Terminal Base
Product Dimensions:
The Allen-Bradley 1734-TOP is a specialized terminal base unit from the POINT I/O™ family. It serves as the physical and electrical interface between the I/O modules and the field wiring, providing a modular and high-density solution for distributed I/O systems.
Product Detailed Description
The 1734-TOP is a one-piece terminal base with 12-point screw-clamp terminations. Unlike the multi-piece 1734-TB versions, the “TOP” designation refers to the integrated design where the terminal block and the base are a single unit. it is designed to snap onto a DIN rail and provide the backplane connection (PointBus) for a single POINT I/O module.

Product Advantages
- High Density: Its slim, 12mm width allows for a large number of I/O points in a very small cabinet footprint.
- Ease of Wiring: The screw-clamp design provides a secure mechanical connection, which is often preferred in high-vibration industrial environments.
- Modular Flexibility: Modules can be removed and replaced without disturbing the field wiring of adjacent bases, significantly reducing maintenance time.
- Integrated Shielding: Provides a direct connection point for cable shields, helping to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) in sensitive signal loops.
- Cost-Effective: The integrated one-piece design is generally simpler to stock and install than modular base/block combinations.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Module Seating: Ensure the I/O module is fully seated and the locking mechanism is engaged. A loose module can cause intermittent “PointBus” communication errors.
- Torque Settings: Tighten the screw terminals to the manufacturer-specified torque (0.6 Nm or 7 lb-in). Over-tightening can strip the threads, while under-tightening can lead to high-resistance connections and overheating.
- Keying: Each base has a mechanical keying switch. Ensure the key position matches the requirements of the module you are installing (e.g., Position 1 for AC modules, Position 4 for DC modules) to prevent inserting the wrong module type.
- Power Limits: Do not exceed the 10 A total current limit across the base. If your I/O modules require high power, you may need to insert a 1734-EP24DC expansion power supply module in the rack.
Product Applications
The 1734-TOP is used across all industries utilizing Allen-Bradley Logix architectures:
- Remote I/O Stations: Connecting field sensors (limit switches, proximity sensors) and actuators (solenoids, motor starters) to a central PLC via EtherNet/IP.
- Control Cabinets: Optimizing space in crowded electrical panels for machine builders (OEMs).
- Process Skids: Providing distributed connectivity for modular equipment in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Assembly Lines: Linking local operator push-buttons and indicator lights back to the main control system.
