Description
Allen-Bradley 1734-MB/1734-RTBS Spring Terminal Block
Product Dimensions:
The Allen-Bradley 1734-MB and 1734-RTBS are essential structural components of the POINT I/O™ system. They provide the physical and electrical interface required to mount and wire I/O modules in a modular, space-efficient manner.
Product Detailed Description
1734-MB (Mounting Base)
The 1734-MB is the standard mounting base that snaps onto a DIN rail. It forms the backplane for the POINT I/O system, allowing data and power to pass between the adapter and the individual I/O modules. It does not include the wiring terminals; it is the “housing” that holds the module and the terminal block.
1734-RTBS (Removable Terminal Block – Spring)
The 1734-RTBS is a 12-terminal spring-style removable terminal block (RTB). It plugs directly into the 1734-MB. The “Spring” mechanism allows for fast, tool-free wiring that is highly resistant to vibration, making it a favorite for industrial machinery.

Product Advantages
- Modularity: The separation of the base (MB) and the terminal block (RTB) allows you to replace a faulty I/O module without disturbing the field wiring.
- Vibration Resistance: The 1734-RTBS spring-clamp design ensures a constant tension on the wire, preventing loose connections in high-vibration environments (unlike screw terminals which can loosen over time).
- Ease of Maintenance: The “Removable” nature of the RTB means you can pre-wire your harness or swap bases without re-terminating every single wire.
- Space Saving: The POINT I/O system is one of the densest on the market, and these components allow for a very slim assembly profile.
- Keying: The units feature mechanical keying to prevent the wrong I/O module from being inserted into a base configured for a different voltage or signal type.
Important Considerations (Precautions)
- Proper Seating: Ensure the 1734-RTBS is fully “clicked” into the 1734-MB. A partial connection can lead to intermittent I/O data or power loss.
- Current Limits: The internal bus can carry up to 10 Amps. If your total I/O power consumption exceeds this, you must use a 1734-EP24DC expansion power supply module.
- Wire Stripping: For the spring clamp (RTBS), ensure wires are stripped to the manufacturer’s recommended length (approx. 10mm) to ensure the clamp grips the copper, not the insulation.
- DIN Rail Grounding: The mounting base relies on the DIN rail for its functional ground. Ensure the DIN rail is zinc-plated or clear-chromate (not painted) for a good electrical connection.
Product Applications
- Distributed I/O: Used in large machines where I/O needs to be placed close to sensors and actuators rather than in a central cabinet.
- Robotic Cells: Due to the 1734-RTBS’s vibration resistance, it is frequently used on robot arms or moving platforms.
- Material Handling: Conveyor systems and sorting facilities where modularity allows for quick repairs.
- OEM Machinery: Preferred by machine builders who want to pre-wire terminal blocks (RTBS) and simply plug them in during final assembly at the customer site.
