Description
Allen-Bradley 100-FSD250 Motor Protection Circuit Breaker
Product Dimensions:
The Allen-Bradley 100-FSD250 is a high-performance Electronic Surge Suppressor accessory from the Bulletin 100-F (MCS-F) series. It is specifically designed to be mounted on the coils of large contactors to protect sensitive control electronics from the damaging effects of voltage transients.
Product Detailed Description
When a contactor coil is de-energized, the collapsing magnetic field generates a high-voltage spike (back-EMF). The 100-FSD250 is a Diode-style surge suppressor that clamps these spikes, preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and protecting PLC outputs or relay contacts that drive the contactor.
The “D” in the part number indicates a Diode characteristic, which is typically used for DC control circuits where a very clean, low-clamping voltage is required.

Product Advantages
- Superior Protection: Unlike Varistors (MOVs) or RC circuits, a Diode suppressor limits the transient voltage to a very low level (the forward voltage drop of the diode), offering the best protection for solid-state outputs.
- Direct Integration: Designed for a tool-free, snap-on installation directly onto the contactor coil terminals, ensuring a compact footprint and no extra wiring.
- EMI Reduction: Significantly reduces electromagnetic noise, preventing “ghost” signals or resets in nearby microprocessors and communication modules.
- Durable Construction: Built to industrial standards to withstand the high vibration and heat typical of motor control centers.
Important Considerations (Precautions)
- DC Only: Diode suppressors like the 100-FSD250 are only for DC control circuits. If applied to an AC circuit, the diode will act as a short circuit during the negative half-cycle and fail immediately.
- Increased Drop-out Time: Note that Diode suppressors increase the “drop-out” time (the time it takes for the contactor contacts to open) more than RC or Varistor types. Ensure your application timing can tolerate a slightly slower disconnection.
- Polarity Sensitive: Because it is a diode, correct polarity must be observed during installation (A1/A2 terminals).
- Voltage Range: Do not exceed 250 V DC. For lower voltage DC circuits (e.g., 24 V DC), you must use the appropriate model (such as the 100-FSD24).
Product Applications
- Heavy Industrial Motor Control: Protecting PLC digital output modules from the back-EMF of large 110V-250V DC contactor coils.
- Power Distribution: Used in switchgear where large contactors manage power logic and require high-speed, clean switching.
- Infrastructure: Ideal for water treatment plants or mining operations where sensitive control electronics are located in the same cabinet as large power switching devices.
- Automation Systems: Any system utilizing Logix controllers or other sensitive microelectronics to drive large DC-coil contactors.
