Description
ABB LM80 Logic Master Module
The ABB LM80 is a high-performance Laser Level Transmitter designed for non-contact level and distance measurement of bulk solids, granulates, and liquids. Utilizing advanced laser time-of-flight technology, it offers an alternative to traditional ultrasonic, radar, or mechanical level devices.
Product Detailed Description
The LM80 operates by emitting an invisible, narrow laser pulse toward the surface of the material being measured. A sensitive optical receiver detects the reflected pulse, and the microprocessor calculates the exact distance based on the speed of light. Because the laser beam has a very narrow divergence angle (less than 0.3°), the LM80 can easily measure level in narrow silos, through protective grids, or near vessel walls without detecting false reflections.

Product Advantages
- Narrow Beam Path: The tight laser beam allows the sensor to measure deep into narrow silos or through narrow nozzles, avoiding internal obstructions like ladders or structural beams that trip up radar or ultrasonic sensors.
- Non-Contact Maintenance-Free Operation: No moving parts to wear out or clean, minimizing field maintenance.
- No Echo Mapping Required: Unlike radar devices, the LM80 does not require complex false-echo mapping during commissioning because it only detects the surface hit by the laser dot.
- Heavy Dust Penetration: When equipped with a dust tube and optional purge air configuration, the laser can reliably penetrate heavy dust conditions common in mining or cement silos.
Important Considerations & Precautions
- Surface Properties: Highly transparent liquids or mirror-like surfaces can cause the laser pulse to reflect away from the receiver rather than back to it. A special liquid dust tube or specific mounting angles may be required for fluid applications.
- Dust Tube Maintenance: In extremely dusty environments, ensure that the dust tube and optical window are kept clean. Using a continuous compressed air purge (instrument air) is strongly recommended to keep the lens free of build-up.
- Laser Safety: The LM80 typically uses a Class 1 laser (safe under all conditions of normal use) or a Class 2 alignment laser (visible for targeting). Do not stare directly into the visible beam during installation.
- Mounting Alignment: The unit must be mounted exactly perpendicular to the material surface for the best signal return, particularly in long-distance silos.
Product Applications
The ABB LM80 is heavily utilized in rugged industrial bulk material processing:
- Mining & Aggregates: Measuring levels in stone crushers, ore silos, surge bins, and rock chutes.
- Cement Production: Level monitoring in clinker silos, fly ash bins, and raw material silos.
- Chemicals & Plastics: Tracking plastic pellets, granules, and powders in high, narrow blending silos.
- Food & Beverage: Grain storage elevators, sugar silos, and animal feed bins.
- Positioning: Long-range distance measurement and positioning for tripper cars or overhead cranes.
